Massachusetts MBTA & Amtrak Accidents
The railroad industry has been plagued with safety problems since the first locomotive was built in America in 1831. While some safety problems have been resolved, the rail industry has been unable to implement a safety policy that works.
Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority or MBTA is no exception to this rule. Although some of the problems faced by Amtrak and the MBTA are external industry wide problems, there are a number of precautions that could, and should, be taken to passengers and MBTA employees as a quick review of 2007 incidents for the MBTA will show. According to the FRA, in 2007 alone the MBTA had 83 "accidents/incidents" resulting in 11 fatalities, and 76 non-fatal incidents. This means that 13% of all incidents resulted in a fatality.
